The Democracy! Suite

The Democracy! Suite is an album recorded during the pandemic in response to the turbulence of 2020. While acknowledging the "drama, beauty, and ugliness of these times," the album celebrates the power of civic duty and people coming together to fight for change.

Taking inspiration from track titles like "Out Amongst the People" and "Ballot Box Bounce", I referenced historic campaign posters, buttons, and signs that captured the music’s "on the ground" energy. While embracing familiar symbols like flag stripes and stars, I also wanted to offset the conventional red, white, and blue that is often associated with American politics. I expanded the color palette with other bright colors, and incorporated the typeface Martin by Vocal Type Co., a foundry that modernizes type originally found on signs from various social and political movements. To further capture the grassroots spirit of the album, I added textures and misalignment to the artwork for a screen printed, handmade feel that extended across print and into the motion design.
